Begin With the End in Mind

Happy Monday, Cleanish Squad!

I’m currently reading Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and it contains so many great lessons. I wanted to share one of the most interesting things from the book with you.

Covey’s chapter on “Habit 2: Begin with The End in Mind” starts with Covey asking you to close your eyes and imagine being at a loved one's funeral. You walk through the doors and see the familiar faces of friends and family, all there to mourn this special loved one. As you make your way towards the casket, you realize the funeral is for you, and all those gathered around are there to remember you.

I know - a little creepy and dark, but then it gets really good…

Covey then suggests imagining the speakers at the funeral: your family members, coworkers, friends, and spouse.

How would they remember you? What special mark will you have left on their lives? What are the words they say to think of you?

Covey says what you imagine them saying about you is what you truly value in your life. He shares the importance of beginning with this end in mind and suggests aligning your life choices to meet that end. Covey notes that we don’t control where we wind up if we don't consider the end, which can lead us to aimlessly make choices throughout our lives with no real goal in mind.

This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes…

The Cheshire Cat from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland wisely tells Alice, who is lost and asking for directions, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.”

This concept applies so well to weight loss and a healthy, cleanish lifestyle. If you don’t have a solid goal, an “end” if you will, it will be hard to stay true to the choices that will get you there.

It can be so easy to get caught up in all the noise of trying to be healthier without consistently making the choices that align with our goals. In reality, all that is truly needed to reach the end we want is to consistently drink more water, eat more clean foods, get good sleep, and get daily movement.

Additionally, when motivation falls short, or temptation arises (because that will inevitably happen…a lot), not understanding your “end” will make it much easier to lose track. If you don’t know why you want to lose weight, eat healthier, or get in shape, any obstacle that comes up can distract you.

Given this, I encourage you to think on why you’re looking to make this positive change in your life. What do you want your loved ones to say about you at your “end”? And what can you do today, tomorrow, and the next day that will get you where you want to be?
