Happy New Year, Cleanish Squad!

Happy New Year, Cleanish Squad!

Did you know only an estimated 7% of Americans who make Resolutions actually complete them, and 53% quit within the first 3 months? Crazy, right?

An October, 2023 survey from Forbes Health asked 1,000 U.S. adults about their attitudes towards resolution setting.

Here are some interesting statistics they found…

  • The most commonly-selected new year’s resolution for 2024 among respondents was fitness

  • Overall, 80% of respondents feel confident in their ability to reach their goals, and only 6% lack this confidence

  • 86% of respondents say their new year’s resolution will have a positive impact beyond 2024

  • 34% of American’s have the resolution to Lose Weight and 48% have the goal of Improved Fitness

Now, we all know New Year’s Resolutions can be hard to keep, but why? Turns out, there are a few scientifically-backed reasons for this, including:

  • Lack Of Support: Participants in a PLoS One Study who were most successful reported receiving support, compared to those who reported receiving no support. :(

  • Type Of Goal: The type of goal you set also matters when it comes to success. Research suggests action-oriented goals are more likely to result in success after a year than avoidance-oriented goals.

  • Not Clearly Defined: Failing to clearly defined a resolution makes it even harder to be successful. Instead, try making your goal “SMART,” or “Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Oriented” improved overall success. I share more about that in this video.

Additional Resolution Tips + Tricks

As a weight loss coach, I’ve also found a couple more indicators of success with my clients who have successfully set a goal and followed through.

Essentially, they follow these two big things:

  1. Create a big goal with small stepping stones. Small successes mean a lot. Sure, you should always dream big. But having small stepping stones where you can say, “I did it!” along the way will give you the boost you need to keep going.

  2. Understand your "Why." Find out why these goals mean so much to you. The “why” behind the goal is really essential for success. Are you doing this for yourself and your sense of self-love? Are you doing it so you can keep up with the kids all day long? These are good reasons! Find a reason for your goals and they’ll be easier to maintain. This is something we discus a lot in my 30 Day Healthy program.

Goals Versus Resolutions

Personally, I prefer goals over resolutions, as goals are easier for me to define and measure. I love the idea of setting BIG goals for the upcoming year, and working hard to reach them. I am more a task-oriented person so having clear goals I can work towards jives better for me. In fact, I recently shared my 2024 goals here on Instagram if you’d like to see them.

Have you set a resolution for 2024? Are you more a goals person, too? Either way, hopefully these tips for what to focus on and what to avoid will help you out along the way!

Here’s to an amazing 2024!
